Profile
Sue has had an extensive career in delivering psychology services since qualifying at the University of Liverpool, in 1989 (M. Clin. Psychol). Currently Sue and her son, Henry Borland, are directors of Hope-Borland Associates and are providers of psychological assessment reports for the following bodies (expertise described below):

· Mental Health Act Tribunals;
· Reports to assist the Courts;
· Reports for Parole Board Hearings;
· Accident Claims and Family Court reports.

Sue also offers consultancy to an Independent Rehabilitation Hospital (Mental Health) in North Wales; which involves co-ordination of the psychological therapy/assessment services throughout the Group. Including provision of services to a number of Residential Mental Health facilities. Duties include assessment, formulation and delivery of therapy, co-ordination of the therapy service and supervision and management of staff who work in the Department.

In addition to the above, Hope-Borland Associates offer psychological assessment and tailored interventions to the legal profession, insurance companies, private health care organisations, the NHS, emergency services and individuals. Sue and (all the associates at HBA), work in a compassionate person-centred manner with a multimodal approach that is integrative and tailored to meet the client’s needs. Sue also volunteers her services to the charitable organisation ‘lifeshare’ which helps homeless & vulnerable people aged 16-25 across Greater Manchester.

Sue has worked in private practice as an expert witness since 1992 in ‘Mental Health Matters’, preparation of reports for MHA Tribunals (in all areas of mental illness), with particular expertise in personality disorder, learning disability/mental health, addiction / dependence (including alcohol and drug issues), and has considerable expertise in relation to giving evidence.

Sue has worked with forensic mental health cases and forensic learning disability cases. She has extensive experience in preparing court reports in ‘Criminal Matters’ such as murder, manslaughter, violence, arson, sex offending, the contribution of addiction to criminal behaviours, internet pornography, mental health issues and the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; traumatic incidents that have necessitated asylum seeking, victims of attacks, victims of accidents, medical trauma/negligence cases, together with preparation of Reports for Risk Assessment including Parole Board Reports.

Sue has significant experience in ‘Family Matters’-Chaotic family systems, parental drug/alcohol abuse and dependence, sexual offending and risk, child abuse, non-accidental injury, ability to protect, ability to provide adequate parenting, sexual risk, physical risk, cases where a parent has gender dysphoria/sexual difficulties, cases where a parent has a
criminal background that has become a cause for concern, mental health instability and the effects of domestic violence on family systems.

Historically Sue was Head of Clinical Services and Head of Psychology at Mental Healthcare Group and director of two private hospitals, specialising in male and female personality disorder. She was also Head of Forensic Clinical Psychology for the Forensic Psychiatric Service of North Wales. During that time, she was involved in commissioning a medium secure unit and setting up the Forensic Psychology Services in North Wales.

Sue has held an Honorary Contract with Sefton Health Authority specialising in gender dysphoria assessments and has been an executive member of NOTA and an Adviser to the Bury Race Relations Equality Council. Sue has also advised the North Wales, South Wales and Greater Manchester Police Forces on occasions, relating to unsolved crimes

Prior to the above, Sue was a Principal Clinical Psychologist at Ashworth Special Hospital in Liverpool and was presented the Freedom of Information Award by the Home Office in 1992.

Sue has also undertaken a considerable amount of training, teaching and supervision of other professionals and her research/publications are in the field of sex offending, arson and emotional recognition.

Currently Sue is studying for a master’s degree in Positive Psychology at Liverpool John Mores University.
